Are Indians shy of discussing sex?

Discussion on sex is a major concern of couples in India where it ranks seventh in priorities for men and near the bottom for women, a survey of sexual habits of people in the Asia Pacific region has revealed.

“Although India was among the top for sexual satisfaction – 73 per cent of those studied claimed they were satisfied – discussion about sexual experience is still a major concern among couples,” said Rosie King, renowned Australian sexologist.

The information about sexual patterns in India was unveiled by King, micro-surgeon and andrologist Rupin Shah and director of Medical and Regulatory Affairs Chandrashekhar Potkar at a press conference recently. In India, men and women both ranked the issues of family life, overall physical health, being a spouse or partner, financial well-being, being a parent and career higher than sex.

The study – titled Asia Pacific Sexual Health and Overall Wellness (APSHOW) – was conducted in 13 countries by Pfizer International.

At least 57 per cent of men and 64 per cent of women in the Asia-Pacific region are not satisfied with their sex life and many of them prioritise sex only after family life, career and financial well-being, according to the study. In 10 countries, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Hong Kong internet-based questionnaires were used for the survey. But in India, China and Thailand face to face interviews were carried out with subjects.

According to Potkar, the study aims at encouraging people to seek help for issues regarding sexual health. The Philippines at 52 per cent, Taiwan 51 per cent and New Zealand 40 per cent followed on the list of sexual satisfaction. Japan had the lowest figure – only 10 per cent were sexually satisfied.

Interestingly, APSHOW survey also says sex plays a more important role for men than in women. While aspects like orgasm were more important to men, in general women put greater importance on physical foreplay, according to the study.

King added, “Sub-optimal levels or lower levels of erection in men have negative impacts on both men and women. It affects romance and life overall.”

Shah said, “Medical intervention for erectile dysfunction does not have adverse effects. Viagra is a prescription drug and is not addictive. It can be a one time or long-term treatment. It is mostly used for aging men for treating erectile dysfunction. In younger men, therapy and counselling works well.”

Just Married Couples

• 90 % couples have sex every night
• 5 % couples have sex twice in a night

Married Couple

• About 5 % of the married couples have sex every night
• About 80 % of the married couples have sex about 2 to 3 times in a week.
• About 15 % of the married couples have sex about once a week.

Time Duration of Sex

• Total time for having sex is 10 to 15 minutes.
• Time spent on foreplay is 5 – 10 minutes.
• Time for actual sex (penetration) is about 5 minutes.

It has been observed that younger couples have sex for a shorter time. Experienced couples have more prolonged sex sessions

Night Dress for Sex

In the rural areas

About 80% of the women wear a sari at night. They do not remove the sari for having sex. The husband raises the blouse to fondle his wife's breasts. The wife lifts her sari and chaniya and husband lowers his lenga or lungi or dhoti for having sex. Neither the wives nor the husbands wear any underwear at home, when they plant to have sex that night.

Only 20% of the couples have had sex after removing all their clothes

In the cities and large towns

About 30% of the women wear a sari at night and about 60% of the women
wear a nightgown About 50% of the couples have sex with their night clothes.

First Sex Experience

Women

• 85 % of the Indian women their first sex experience is with their husbands on their wedding night.
• 10 % of the Indian women their first sex experience is with their lover and boy friends.
• The rest of the women have their first sex experience with their husbands but not on their wedding night. They had sex with their husband after their wedding night

Men

• 65 % of Indian men their first sex experience is with their wives on
• their wedding night.
• 15 % of men their first sex experience is with their girlfriends
• 15 % of men had their first sex experience when they have been seduced
• by a older woman.
• 10 % of men had their first sex experience with a prostitute

Foreplay

• 100% of the husbands kiss their wives before and whilst sexing them.
• 100% of the husbands press their wives' breasts before sexing them.

Orgasm

• 20% of the wives had orgasms during sex
• 60% of the wives say they do not get orgasms but they get a nice feeling getting sexed
• 20% of the wives have no feelings whilst getting sexed; they do it because they have to give their body to their husband for his fun and pleasure.

Sex Education

Middle and Upper Class

• 50 % of the men ad women have had some sort of formal sex education in their school or college
• 50 % of the men learnt form their friends, relatives or Internet

Lower Class

• Less than 10 % of the men ad women have had some sort of formal sex education in their school or college

• 80 % of the women learnt from their husbands after getting married.
