1. Consider the person's recall: Liars never forget what they have to say but they may stumble when telling a tale by making contradicting statements. They're also eager to change the subject.

2. Observe the person's overall body language: Liars can look ill at ease, fiddling with their hair, stroking their throat, or rubbing their eyes. With their body often turned away from you, you may notice hand or leg fidgeting. Liars also have trouble swallowing and may shake their heads after a point has been made. When the subject finally gets changed, they appear happier and more comfortable, maybe laughing nervously.

3. Take notice of any defensiveness: Liars will often take offence to any indication that they're under suspicion. They're likely to throw any accusations you throw at them back at you. They will also talk too much, feeling the need to over-explain themselves.

4. Home in on facial expressions: Liars fail to control their micro-expressions. While fibbing, you may notice nervous twitching. Their hand may be covering or touching their face. People also tend to touch the mouth when feeling guilty or anxious. They're particularly good with fake smiles.

5. Don't overlook the Pinocchio reaction: When a human tells a lie, extra blood gets pumped through the body and the nose swells by a fraction of millimeter. Liars may subsequently touch the tip of their nose unconsciously.

6. Concentrate on the eyes: A liar has a troubled brow and downcast or darting eyes. They have trouble directly engaging your gaze. They also give you eye-accessing clues. If the person is telling you the truth, he'll look up and to the left since that's the side of the brain we use for recalling information. If she's lying, she'll look up and to the right, which is the creative side of the brain, because she's mentally constructing something that hasn't happened.

7. Note the person's voice: The higher the stakes are, the more the liar has a fear of getting caught. With this, the liar has a harder time controlling his body language or her voice. The pitch or rate of the speech may change, with the individual giving a lot of "umms" and "ahhs." Often, a liar will appear stilted and monotone. Answers may seem rehearsed. (ANI)

Are Indians shy of discussing sex?

Discussion on sex is a major concern of couples in India where it ranks seventh in priorities for men and near the bottom for women, a survey of sexual habits of people in the Asia Pacific region has revealed.

“Although India was among the top for sexual satisfaction – 73 per cent of those studied claimed they were satisfied – discussion about sexual experience is still a major concern among couples,” said Rosie King, renowned Australian sexologist.

The information about sexual patterns in India was unveiled by King, micro-surgeon and andrologist Rupin Shah and director of Medical and Regulatory Affairs Chandrashekhar Potkar at a press conference recently. In India, men and women both ranked the issues of family life, overall physical health, being a spouse or partner, financial well-being, being a parent and career higher than sex.

The study – titled Asia Pacific Sexual Health and Overall Wellness (APSHOW) – was conducted in 13 countries by Pfizer International.

At least 57 per cent of men and 64 per cent of women in the Asia-Pacific region are not satisfied with their sex life and many of them prioritise sex only after family life, career and financial well-being, according to the study. In 10 countries, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Hong Kong internet-based questionnaires were used for the survey. But in India, China and Thailand face to face interviews were carried out with subjects.

According to Potkar, the study aims at encouraging people to seek help for issues regarding sexual health. The Philippines at 52 per cent, Taiwan 51 per cent and New Zealand 40 per cent followed on the list of sexual satisfaction. Japan had the lowest figure – only 10 per cent were sexually satisfied.

Interestingly, APSHOW survey also says sex plays a more important role for men than in women. While aspects like orgasm were more important to men, in general women put greater importance on physical foreplay, according to the study.

King added, “Sub-optimal levels or lower levels of erection in men have negative impacts on both men and women. It affects romance and life overall.”

Shah said, “Medical intervention for erectile dysfunction does not have adverse effects. Viagra is a prescription drug and is not addictive. It can be a one time or long-term treatment. It is mostly used for aging men for treating erectile dysfunction. In younger men, therapy and counselling works well.”

Spermicide Coke, Fertile Strippers Scoop Ig Nobel Awards! Studies that suggested sodas such as Coke and Pepsi kill sperms and exotic lap dancers make more money when they are at peak fertility have been awarded the 2008 Ig Nobel prize.

In 1980s, when researcher Deborah Anderson of Harvard Medical School's birth- control laboratory discovered that "Coca Cola douches" were being used as a type of contraception at the all-girl Catholic boarding school she had attended in Puerto Rico, she decided to test it.
For the study, Anderson, medical student Sharee Umpierre and gynaecologist, Joe Hill mixed four different types of Coke with sperm in test tubes.

A minute later, they found that all sperm were dead in the Diet Coke, however, 41pct were still swimming in the just-introduced New Coke.

"Coca-Cola douches had become a part of contraceptive folklore during the 1950s and 1960s, when other birth-control methods were hard to come by," New Scientist quoted Anderson, as saying.

"It was believed that the carbonic acid in Coke killed sperm, and the method came with its own 'shake and shoot applicator'" - the classic Coke bottle," she added.

Another study, led by University of New Mexico psychologists proposing that lap dancers earn more money when they are at peak fertility also won the award.

During the research, psychologists Geoffrey Miller, Joshua Tybur and Brent Jordan asked women working as lap dancers to report their nightly tips, and whether they were on hormonal contraceptives or menstruating naturally.

The two groups of women received similar tips when they were in non-fertile parts of their cycle, but when the naturally menstruating women reached their fertile days, the researchers found, they earned significantly more.

A Brazilian study led by Astolfo Araujo of the University of Sao Paulo and Jose Marcelino of Sao Paolo's Department of Historical Heritage on armadillos, the burrowing animals, which showed that the pesky creatures can move the artifacts in archaeological dig sites up, down and even laterally by several meters as they dig also won the prestigious alternative prize.
Another experiment with huge implications for health policy won the Ig Nobel medicine prize for Dan Ariely of Duke University in North Carolina.

He gave two groups of volunteers identical placebos masquerading as painkillers, telling one group the pills cost 2.50 dollars each and the other that the pills had been discounted to 10 cents each.

The volunteers didn't pay for the pills, but those who took the "more costly" fake medicine felt less pain from electric shocks than those who took the cheap fakes This showed that price affects people's expectations and thus their response to medicine, Ariely says - the more expensive the pill, the more relief they expect.

These awards, presented at Harvard University, are organised by the humorous scientific journal the Annals of Improbable Research for research achievements "that make people laugh - then think". (ANI)
